AP: Iraqis Say Saddam Not Leading Attacks
SAMARA, Iraq – A former Iraqi general who claims to be part of the insurgency against U.S. troops says the guerrilla war around this “Sunni Triangle” city is being waged by small groups fighting on their own without direction from Saddam Hussein (news – web sites) or others.
He and two other Samara men, who said they are in separate guerrilla units, insisted in interviews with The Associated Press that their fight isn’t aimed at returning Saddam to power. They said it’s about ending the U.S.-led occupation and restoring Iraqi rule.

BAGHDAD:The commanding general of the U.S. Army division that patrols much of Iraq’s eastern borders with Syria and Jordan said Tuesday that his men had encountered almost no foreigners trying to sneak into the country to carry out attacks against American and allied forces.
“I want to underscore that most of the attacks on our forces are by former regime loyalists and other Iraqis, not foreign forces,” said Major General Charles Swannack Jr., commander of the 82nd Airborne Division.

During a news briefing Tuesday evening, Swannack said his men had captured 13 foreign guerrillas and killed seven more in recent months. Ten days ago, Colonel David Teeples, who is part of Swannack’s command, said the number of foreigners captured or killed was just a fraction of the 500 to 600 people captured “who were involved in attacks on coalition forces.”

California Police Issue Arrest Warrant for Michael Jackson
California authorities said today that they had issued an arrest warrant for the singer Michael Jackson on multiple counts of child molestation.
The sheriff of Santa Barbara County, Jim Anderson, said at a press conference today that he and the district attorney, Thomas W. Sneddon Jr., were working with Mr. Jackson’s lawyers to arrange for his surrender, and that they would ask bail of $3 million be set for him.
Great, another famous person in trouble that the press can babble about instead of being ACTUAL JOURNALISTS.

US state to allow gay marriage
Massachusetts is poised to become the only US state to allow gay marriage following a legal ruling yesterday which will have widespread political ramifications ahead of next year’s presidential election.
The Massachusetts supreme court gave the state’s lawmakers 180 days to work out how to ensure equality at the altar after ruling 4 to 3 that same-sex couples were legally entitled to get married under its constitution.
“Whether and whom to marry, how to express sexual intimacy, and whether and how to establish a family – these are among the most basic of every individual’s liberty and due process rights,” the majority opinion said. “And central to personal freedom and security is the assurance that the laws will apply equally to persons in similar situations.”
If you’re wondering why I’m using a Guardian article…………..I don’t know. Anyway, this is a step forward. No doubt it’s going to have the Right up in arms, but………………..they’re already up in arms.
Though, I do have some reservations about this. The word “marriage” has religious connotations. Why homosexuals would want to be a part of the religion that has treated them so brutally over the years is beyond me. And since many Christians believe marriage is “a sacred union between man and woman” it pisses them off quite a lot. But, really, marriage isn’t seen as religious in the eyes of the government. So, what, just tell the Christians to deal with it? I think there’s a better way. Change marriage to something else in official documents. Civil Union or whatever. For everyone. Call it whatever you want, but remove the word from gov’t use. You’ve removed the technicality used to hide the bigotry of anti-homosexuality conservatives, hopefully revealing how truly bigoted they are if they continue to oppose. And we’ve severed one more strand in the connection of religion to state.

The Daily Howler rips (and I do mean rips) into Goldberg’s new book, Arrogance. I have to say, Goldberg made an incredibly obvious error (deception, in all likelihood); it’s stunning that he would even think he’d get away with it. Or maybe, it doesn’t matter. John Kerry still thought a couple months ago that Gore said he invented the internet. But go read this, and feel the wrath of Somerby.

Schwarzenegger Becomes Calif. Gov.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) – Setting a goal of no less than a “miracle” in California politics, action movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger (news – web sites) was sworn in as governor on Monday and immediately rescinded $4 billion in state taxes.
Replacing the unpopular Democrat Gray Davis (news – web sites) whom he ousted in a recall last month, Schwarzenegger ended a widely criticized hike in the state’s car tax in his first act as the 38th governor of the nation’s most populous state.
In a 12-minute inaugural speech outside the capitol frequently interrupted by applause, Schwarzenegger said his election last month was “the people’s veto for politics as usual.”
“Today is a new day in California,” he told an inauguration audience of about 7,500 invited guests, including four past California governors, Hollywood celebrities and foreign dignitaries. “I will not rest until our fiscal house in order.”
Citing the drafting of the U.S. Constitution in 1787 as the “Miracle of Philadelphia,” Schwarzenegger called for similar action in California. “Now the members of the legislature and I must bring about the ‘Miracle of Sacramento,”‘ he said.
Next up: Arnold appoints angels to fix budget. After slight improvement, Arnold declares miracle, claims he is God. Californians believe him.

I misread the article linked in this post. I thought it meant transferred out of the country. Stupid little words like “terrorists” change the entire meaning! I blame the English language. Anyway, it’s still an interesting study, and is coverd in the Washington Post.
