Debate fact check

Factcheck.org has a debate article out. Let’s compare and contrast, shall we?

Bush:

  • Spending reconstruction money is progress. We’re actually spending it too slowly
  • 100,000 trained troops. Actually, only 8,000 have had 8 weeks of training, most have 3 weeks.
  • Kerry said he’ll withdraw in six months. Actually said if his plan is successful we could start in six months.
  • 75% of al Qaeda leaders caught. That’s pre-9/11 leaders, CIA says 2/3, IISS says Iraq has increased al Qaeda recruitment
  • 10 million Afghans registered to vote. Likely inflated.
  • We worked with Congress to create Dept. of Homeland Security. Actually opposed creation
  • Increased spending on nuclear proliferation 35%. Actually, he proposed cut, Congress added spending.

Kerry:

  • Bush lost Bin Laden at Tora Bora by using warlords. We aren’t sure if he was actually there.
  • War has cost 200 billion. Only 120 billion has been spent, 200 billion allocated.
  • Spending 100s of millions on bunker busting nukes. Actually, only 35 million proposed this year, 500 million sent aside for future budgets.
  • Weapons of mass destruction crossing Iraq border. Meant terrorists.
  • Visited Treblinka square in Russia. Actually meant Lubyanka square
  • Subway shut down during convention. Didn’t happen

Now, let’s see. Bush has 7, Kerry 6. Two of Kerry’s were simply errors that weren’t political or deliberate. Kerry twice conflates what Bush has done with what he wants to do. Looks like Kerry came off a bit better.
