Presidential Debate

October 8th, 2004

Well, Bush is spouting the same nonsense as last time so far. Kerry did a decent job explaining some “flip-flops.”

Shit, I missed that guys question. Sounded good at the end. Bush doesn’t seem to be answering the question, though. Oil for food program! Really. That makes it worth it. Seriously. Guys?

Saying it more forcefully doesn’t make it true, Mr. Bush.

The Republican critique angle is pretty strong, I wanna see how Bush responds. Of course, he won’t. Damn it, talk to the audience Kerry! Bush is apparently not aware that he’s not getting support when he says the war was justified.

Tora Bora again. This is just like the last debate. Bush spouts some more platitudes, but has a decent point about focusing Osama alone. Kerry should try to mention al Qaeda instead of Osama.

Euro-weenies! In other news, my mouse pointer is possessed.

I wish Kerry would go after Bush on the ICC. But it’s probably not a smart move.

Interesting angle by Kerry on listening to the generals, haven’t heard that line before.

Shit, Bush is gonna nail Kerry on that “where [Iraq] there wasn’t a threat” line. Maybe. I could be overestimating his intelligence. Bush seems to be controlling the grimaces this time. Oh, a joke about it! Saddam was deceiving the inspectors? What was he hiding?

Bush’s strategy seems to be to state himself forcefully. He just sounds whiny to me. Kerry does it better and doesn’t rely on it as much.

Oh god, “the internets.” Holy shit, I never knew there was more than one! What is Kerry going to say on the draft? This is going to be weird. Kerry’s still talking to Bush, not the audience. Damn it.

Oh, Bush is pissed!

Interesting Missouri line, a bit silly, though.

Kerry’s doing a good job with Bush’s “tax gap” comment. Bush’s cutting the intelligence budget line was well placed. And now, if the Bush campaign says Kerry has flip flopped on the PATRIOT Act, they’re lying. Bush just backed off from it. Bush just called his tax cut a “tax cut for the middle class.” Complete nonsense, of course.

Canadian drugs – they may kill you, even though they don’t kill Canadians. Apparently we Americans are just weak. Strong Kerry line on prescription drugs. What the fuck, who did Bush just wink at?

That tort reform lady seemed kinda hostile. I thought we were worried about Kerry partisans? Kerry’s health plan is really good. I think single-payer may be better, but this is very good, as a moderate progressive solution. Bush is going off on his normal nonsense (did he say Kennedy instead of Kerry?). Bush apparently thinks all tort reform bills are the same.

Ouch, that’s quite the question. Bush didn’t say the recession began before his term, at least. Just implied it. 1.9 million jobs in one year, that’s spectacular! That comment on Kerry’s plan is sketchy. Maybe some fodder for Bush. Kerry’s doing good with Bush’s tax cut. Not bad that Kerry just promised no tax increases for people under $200,000. Hey, a new Bush line. Broke what spending caps 200 times? Sounds sketchy. “Battling green eye shades?” What the hell?

98 times to raise taxes. Bush is missing the subtlety. Not that it’s accurate the other way either.

What the hell is Kerry going off about labels for? Who cares? Good lines on the environment, though. You know, Bush likes to take credit for things he doesn’t have anything to do with, when it’s popular.

Kerry sound good on the competitive question. Bush just lied, saying Kerry doesn’t favor medical liability reform. Oi, the small business line. Complete nonsense. Oh, Kerry’s nailing it! Bush just looked like an ass, seeing as he proved Kerry’s point. He doesn’t own a timber company, yet he’s counted as a small business owner.

You know, the Patriot Act is hard to argue about. It has some bad provisions, but it has some decent ones. Repeal may not be the best idea, but I’m not sure Kerry goes far enough in changing it. Kerry had some good lines on it, though (sounding repetitious, aren’t I?).

First president to allow embryonic stem cell research? Shit, I forgot what was wrong with that claim. I think he just exaggerated the number of lines again, I think. Heh, Kerry’s line was pretty good.

Great, Bush isn’t going to appoint a judge that believes in slavery! That’s a load off.

Kerry is not really answering the question on federal funds for abortion. Well, he kinda did. The Laci Peterson Act is not reasonable, it’s a ideological attack on abortion. A circumvention of the SC’s rulings. We’re really seeing the contrasts in the two candidates here. Kerry made clear his differences, Bush denied they were differences. Simple versus nuanced. Idiotic versus smart.

Bush really hasn’t used the global test remarks much. Once, I think. That’s kinda surprising. But we’re coming up on closing statements, so we’ll get another shot. Kerry’s is sounding decent enough. I’m sure Bush’s will be nonsense. Yep, pretty much.

Now, who won? Bush did much better than last time. Kerry definitely won on substance (of course I’m gonna say that), Bush maybe lost a little on style. The spinners will definitely be able to push this either way. The Democrats need to be out in full force tonight.

I really thought that Kerry won this without a doubt; especially considering Bush’s composure in the beginning. Also, as you stated above, Kerry had some rather good responses and answers so hopefully he will get a boost in polls.
