Something I’ve been thinking about
Published by Jeff, August 31st, 2005 in SkepticismI’ve been toying with the idea of writing a letter to the Chronicle about their publishing of a daily horoscope. I keep bouncing back and forth between “this is an important critical thinking issue” and “people read these things for fun and there are bigger issues to get pissy about.” I don’t know that the Chronicle would even publish it. It’s not like this is some current and pressing issue, though it would at least be something different.
You’d get the typical letters in response, if at all. A couple of crackpots saying they met their life partner because of horoscopes, a couple people defending it as harmless, and perhaps one of support.
You’ve got to admit that nowadays, horoscopes may be one of the most straightforward bits of reporting in the entire paper.
My friend, they publish just about everything else. Tie it to the current push for the equally ridiculous idea of ID, and then you got a beefy letter.
