A right to complain
Starting a real job on Monday gives me some new responsibilities. For one, I get to actually pay taxes. Before, I’ve been a dependent of my parents, so I got most of whatever I paid in taxes back. Now, this isn’t that interesting, except that it allows me to say a couple things I couldn’t before.
First, I now can complain about taxes. We all know this time-honored tradition. The political version has conservatives attempting to brow beat young liberals into not supporting government programs. You’ll see, they say, once you have a family and a real job, you’ll understand what you’re doing, supporting more taxes! I’m not all the way there yet, though. Still, I look forward to growing old and cynical, turning into a libertarian, and complaining about those silly liberals wantin’ to take all my money.
Second, I have access to a new level of righteous indignation. As I said, I haven’t really been paying taxes. Now that I will be, I can say things like “this is outrageous! My tax dollars are paying for this nonsense!” Whether it’s bizarre government-funded art or NSA wiretapping, I now can go that extra step in my indignation over something the government is doing.
I think this is going to be fun. Entering the world of adult tax cliches is a big step in my life and I look forward to jumping in.
I remember the first time I had to pay taxes. Welcome to citizenship.
