Oh, I’m proud of myself now

I compiled my own kernel and it works. I can now see two CPUs in System Monitor. Sweet.

I’m sorry, I’m sure you’re all absolutely enamored of my Ubuntu adventures, but I’m enjoying this.

Why did you need to compile your own kernel? They didn’t have an SMP option in the repos?

Well, Ubuntu only seems to have generic kernels now (all the k7, i686, etc specific ones are deprecated and point to the generic version). I tried to install that and X server wouldn’t load. Of course, that happened when I compiled one myself, but after reading about compiling kernels on the Ubuntu forums I knew to fix it by reinstalling my nVidia drivers. So, I’m not entirely sure what a generic kernel has (I assume basically everything) and I haven’t tried it again, but I may not have had to do it myself.

Hunh, you’re right. I didn’t notice that the SMPs had been obsoleted. But apparently Dual Core and nVidia don’t play well together.
