MLK day
Published by Jeff, January 15th, 2007 in Social issuesI remember in high school one year on MLK day someone put up fliers on the doors of the school: “Racists don’t celebrate Martin Luther King day. Troy High School doesn’t celebrate Martin Luther King day.” We didn’t have the day off, if you didn’t guess. I think they lasted most of the morning. I thought it was kind of amusing.
Perhaps there’s a point in those inflammatory fliers. We can disagree on issues regarding race: affirmative action, how prevalent is it nowadays, the importance of it, etc. Beyond those issues, however, we can agree that we’re all human beings and should be treated as such, regardless of race. That’s the legacy of MLK, and we should be proud of how far we’ve come, even though there is more work to be done.
Thought I should get that in before it actually stops being MLK day.
