Somehow, I think the answers to the first question and the why to the coverage of Smith are similar.

I can’t help but think of that old In Living Color sketch where two newscaster report–very seriously–on some issue or another while Jim Carrey is going crazy in the background. Somehow, I think, that’s gotten to be the norm.
