Moses was high!

March 12th, 2008

So says some Israeli researcher:

High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published this week.

Such mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor of cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the Time and Mind journal of philosophy.

Um…sure. We can go with that.

I’m reminded of attempts to explain various Biblical miracles naturally (i.e. a volcano did it). It’s sort of…pointless. There’s no archaeological evidence of an exodus nor a bunch of people wandering around the desert for 40 years (and there should be, mind you). You need to work on a reasonable historical basis before you start explaining exactly what happened.

You must have read the same book as I did – The Bible Unearthed. I have further questions about the Exodus – the ability for thousands of people to sustain themselves in a hostile climate that normally (and barely) supports a few nomadic remnants.

About the plagues that God did on teh Egyptians before they set the Jewish people free – wasn’t it a little harsh to go in and start killing children? And the think about frogs – that’s a little far-fetched, man. All the others – gnats and flies and locusts and water turing into blood – I’m totally there. I buy it. But frogs? Give me a break.

Boy is your server slow today.

Yep, I have read that book. The same authors have another book on David that’s also pretty good.

You shouldn’t question God’s will, Mark. Times were different back then. Those kids had it coming.
