Brazil? Really?

February 9th, 2009

The Corner is counting down the top 25 “conservative” movies. Number twenty two is Terry Gilliam’s Brazil.

Labeling a movie conservative for depicting a totalitarian society seems like a pretty broad use of the term. Which is fine, but it give me an excuse to note that Terry Gilliam renounced his American citizenship because of no-longer-President Bush. So the director of one of the top conservative movies is apparently anti-American. Silly people.

Geez, I woulda pegged it for a liberal movie, what with its message of valuing personal expression above government and community, and a cry against blind materialism…

Terry Gilliam and George Orwell have always promoted one and the same totalitarian ideology. The same is true of Lenny Bruce and William S. Burroughs. Some things are just too obvious! Why doubt it?

I hope V for Vendetta was number one.

Juno was the one that really threw me off. It is about a girl that made a choice all on her own. In this case it was the right choice, but the point is that she made the choice all on her own.

I would nominate “There Will Be Blood” as the top conservative movie of all time. Capitalism at its best.
